1. Character Sketch of Aram
Aram was a nine year old Armenian boy belonging to the Garoghlanian Tribe.
He was very fond of his cousin brother, Mourad.
He was also crazy about horses and always longed to ride one.
He was aware of the legendary reputation of his family which was known for its honesty
However, he gets carried away when he gets the opportunity to ride the beautiful white horse that Mourad got.
He even justifies that keeping someone else’s horse to ride was not stealing as they did not plan to sell it for money.
He was really thrilled when Mourad asked him come for a ride.
Unfortunately, each time he tried to ride the horse on his own, he fell off and the horse ran out of control.
He follows all of Mourad’s instructions because he wanted to be able to ride the horse for as long as possible.
In the end, both he and Mourad decide to return the horse to John Byro not because they were afraid of getting caught.
They did so because they did not want to be called liars and tarnish the reputation of their family.
Aram is the narrator of the story and through his eyes the readers get an insight into the innocence with which little children view the world.
2. Character sketch of Mourad
Mourad is Aram’s 13 year old cousin. He is considered to be crazy by all in the family. Aram was especially fond of him.
Bold and fearless, he got a white horse and managed to ride it for almost a month without letting anyone know.
He knew how much Aram loved horses and longed to ride them.
He was thoughtful and asked Aram to join him to ride the horse.
Mourad was kind soul and had a way people and animals.
The dogs wouldn’t bark at him and he even repaired the broken wind of a robin.
He developed a special bond with the horse and had learned to control it well.
After getting the horse back, its owner, John Byro said that the horse was stronger and better-tempered.
In the end, both Mourad and Aram decide to return the horse to John Byro not because they were afraid of getting caught.
They did so because they did not want to be called liars and tarnish the reputation of their family.

3. How does the story convey the message of honesty and integrity despite the strong desire of the boys to keep the horse.
Aram and Mourad take a lot of pride in their tribe’s repution for honesty for over eleven centuries. Despite their poverty, no one from their tribe would ever steal. Things change when their own strong desire to ride a horse takes over their judgement. Mourad keeps the horse with him for over a month and tells Aram about it only because he knew how much Aram loved horses. The boys convinced themselves that they were merely borrowing the horse to ride and did not intend to sell it. Their meeting with John Byro was the turning point for them. Byro was convinced that the horse was exactly like the one he lost but he has great respect for the Garoghalian tribe which was known for its honesty. Thus, he refused to believe that the horse was stolen from him and simply said that it was possibly a twin of his horse. In the end, both Mourad and Aram decide to return the horse to John Byro not because they were afraid of getting caught.
They did so because they did not want to be called liars and tarnish the reputation of their family.
